Wrapping up Summer
We are officially in the second half of September and summer truly feels like she’s surrendering to the coming autumn. It’s been a beautiful season here on the island - my personal version of the perfect temperatures, generally ranging from 65°- 80°F with rain showers at regular intervals. The tomatoes weren’t exactly thrilled with the cooler temperatures but thankfully I have a friend who taught me to make fried green tomatoes with the many I have that didn’t ripen.
There were no road trips for us this summer, but not for lack of talking about taking one. The months just seemed to pass by so quickly, filled with building projects, summer markets with my pottery, a quick trip to visit my dad in Minnesota, and then, just last week a trip to spend 6 days with my mentor group and our mentor at her home in the mountains. I think this has been the year of building and the summer embodied that perfectly. So much of that building has been in building knowledge and with it, growing my pottery business. My year long mentorship group has helped me to grow in ways I didn’t even know I needed. My glaze course at the beginning of the year allowed me to learn chemistry, building my confidence, and I’ve begun creating work that is exactly what I’ve been envisioning. And through it all I’ve begun building relationships with galleries, market organizers, and new customers that have allowed me to expand where I can share my work. It’s not exactly how I thought the year would look but it’s been exactly what I’ve needed and I’m looking forward to seeing what these last three months of the year have in store.
I was recently interviewed for the Jeanne Oliver podcast where we talked about creativity, friendship, and making home through the various season of life. The conversation inspired me to look at my life over the past 10-20 years and see for how needs for those things have changed. It’s so interesting that sometimes talking through something with a friend, especially an old one, is the best way to see it more clearly yourself.
